Liquid screed preparation
Meticulous liquid screed preparation is essential for creating a smooth, level floor.
Liquid screed preparation
Clockwork Screed supplies and installs high performance, cementitious liquid screed. We ensure that all subfloors have been fully prepared before beginning the liquid screed installation.
Without adequate preparation, the quality of the smooth and even liquid screed finish, and its durability, can be compromised.
How to prepare your floor for liquid screed
To prepare your floor for liquid screed so that the installation creates a level, robust surface ready for a final floor covering, you need to ensure the subfloor is adequately cleaned and sealed:
· Dust and debris must be thoroughly cleaned away from the surface of the subfloor so that there is a clean base onto which the liquid screed can be poured
· Any concrete laitance must be removed. Laitance is a layer of fine, powdery particles that often forms on top of concrete
· Once the floor has been cleared and laitance has been removed, the floor must be sealed using a watertight membrane. It is essential that when applying the membrane it fully covers the floor and is properly adhered to the substrate
Once cleaned and sealed, expansion foam should be applied to the subfloor so that the natural expansion and contraction of liquid screed is accommodated and it won’t crack or lift over time. The expansion foam should be inserted around the edges of the floor and on any joints including doorways.
Liquid screed preparation - key factors
Key factors of liquid screed preparation include:
· If liquid screed is to be applied on underfloor heating, liquid insulation should be installed prior to installing the underfloor heating system and applying the screed. The liquid screed can then be poured on top of the underfloor heating system
· Without a clean, primed subfloor, liquid screed should not be applied
· Liquid screed is self-levelling so it is essential that the floor has been adequately prepared and all elements such as door openings, and differences in floor heights between rooms, have been taken into account to ensure an even floor finish.
