Floor screed installation process

An expertly executed floor screed installation process guarantees a smooth level floor, ready for the application of a final floor finish.

Floor screed installation process

Clockwork Screed are experts in the floor screed installation process. We have been supplying and installing cementitious floor screeds to main contractors, and directly to clients, across the North West for over thirty years.

Our liquid floor screed is pumped directly onto the subfloor. The screed self-levels, and it also self-compacts around underfloor heating pipework, so the liquid floor screed installation process does not require the manual intervention of traditional screeds.

How to install a floor screed - a step by step guide

At Clockwork Screed we would always advocate using a professional service like ours to install a floor screed. However, if you feel confident to carry out your own floor screed installation, here is a step by step guide for creating a smooth, level floor.

1.    Ensure the subfloor has been sufficiently prepared. Liquid floor screed preparation involves cleaning the subfloor and removing any surface dust (laitance) that has developed on the concrete

2.    Apply a full coverage of watertight membrane of at least 1000 gauge to prime the floor, filling any gaps or cracks, so that moisture can’t seep into the screed

3.    If the liquid screed is being poured on top of an underfloor heating system, secure the pipes so that they can’t float

4.    Insert expansion foam around the edges of the floor and in any joints, including doorways. This will prevent the liquid screed from cracking or lifting as it expands

5.    Once you are satisfied that the subfloor is clean, primed and watertight, you can begin with the liquid floor screed installation by setting the liquid screed pump in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions

6.    Connect the hose and check that it can reach the floor where the screed will be poured

7.    Now you can begin to pour the liquid screed, as long as the room temperature is between 5°C and 30°C

8.    Start pumping the screed at the end furthest away from the door so that you finish in the doorway, maintaining a consistent flow rate throughout

9.    Check the manufacturer’s guidance for drying times and curing.
